The mechanical musical movement was invented in 1796 in Geneva, but from around 1815, Sainte-Croix in the Vaud region of Switzerland, became the centre of the mechanical musical world and it was in 1886 that Albert Reuge established his business in Sainte-Croix, which is where it still exists today.
Reuge was led for most of the last century by Guido Reuge, and his passion for his mechanical music business is the main reason for Reuge still making exquisite music boxes and mechanical singing birds today.
Beautiful luxury boxes, made using rare wood veneers, contain fine musical
movements in a variety of sizes, which play from one to four melodies. Other boxes contain interchangeable cylinders playing from 15 to 36 melodies. Singing birds in cages and tabatière, or snuff boxes, are charming luxury curiosities.
